Ankle Replacement Surgery

img40 Like an arthritic hip or knee, the ankle joint may wear out and become painful. To relieve ankle pain, new advances in the replacement of the worn out joint are now available. This is called “Ankle Replacement Surgery”. Unlike procedures or surgeries that fuse or make the joint stiff, total ankle replacement surgery replaces the worn out joint surfaces with new ones made of titanium. The titanium becomes part of your normal bone. Placed in between the metal surfaces is a piece of plastic which acts as a bearing to allow for pain-free range of motion, normal walking and wearing of shoes.

Ankle Surgery

Many individuals work closely together as a team to make your ankle surgery a success.

Besides the ankle surgeon, there is the office staff, laboratory personnel, x-ray technicians, nurses, and operating room assistants to name a few.

When you elect to have ankle surgery, it is necessary to have a reasonable level of expectation as to what the surgery will accomplish. While most factors can be controlled to insure a good result, the outcome of your surgery is affected by your ability to heal and various other underlying influences.

Remember, ankle replacement surgery will not cure all problems, but it is meant to be used to alleviate conditions unresponsive to conservative care.
